The Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) has warned it will embark on an industrial action if government fails to pay agreed salary adjustments in two weeks. Speaking at a press conference in Cape Coast, POTAG said government has failed to implement a road map agreed last year to address salary disparities between members of POTAG and their counterparts in other tertiary institutions. The president of POTAG, Mr Benjamin Kojo Otoo said it is unfortunate that the government has abused the compromising stands always taken by the association on issues concerning their service conditions. Mr Otoo said POTAG accepted a 20 per cent increment in salary in 2007 with the hope that a road map to address disparities between their service conditions and that of their counterparts in other tertiary institutions would be implemented in January 2007. He said that was the outcome of the standing joint negotiation committee of polytechnic meeting. The meeting held in August last year agreed on the payment of a rate of 1000 dollars per annum for book allowances and three million cedis per annum for research allowances. But POTAG said this road map which should have taken effect in January this year is stillborn. Several efforts to seek redress with the government and the National Labour Commission have proved futile. The association said it can no longer tolerate the deception and ill treatment from the government and prepared to use any means to seek redress. Mr Otoo has challenged the National Labor Commission to take up the issue before it gets out of hand. “We have notified the NLC and our employer. We are expecting that the NLC and the employer would take steps to resolve the issue,” he said. But the Executive Secretary of NLC, Mr Joseph Aryittey told Joy News no official complaint has been filed with it and will rather not comment or intervene at this stage. The Minister of Education, Papa Owusu Ankomah said he is yet to study recommendations that came out of a meeting held last week on the matter. He said he will formally respond to the polytechnic teachers concerns later.
