Parents and teachers in the Jirapa District in the Upper West Region are being blamed for the poor showing of the district in the basic certificate examination (BECE).
Participants at a stakeholders meeting held by PRONET-NORTH, an NGO were of the view that though there is an acute shortage of teachers in the district, the few at post are also not committed to their job.
According to them, the parents also appear not to be committed to taking care of their children as well.
Joy FM’s Upper West Regional Correspondent, Abdul Rafiq Salam reports that the NGO was particularly concerned about the situation of the girls in the district.
The Director of PRONET-North, Martin Dery said “we believe that education for girls may well be one of the best ways by which we can enlighten majority of our people and ensure that the future livelihood prospects of our women improves.”
He said the NGO was determined to improve particularly girl education in the area.
