Poor state of roads in Pru East District affecting farmers

Farmers in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region are relying on tractors to transport foodstuff to the market for sale.

Due to the poor state of roads in the area, trucks and tricycles that were previously used to transport farm produce have stopped serving the district.

This has left farmers with no reliable means of getting their crops to market, putting them in a difficult position.

The drivers of the tractors have voiced their frustration with the poor road conditions, noting that tricycles are unable to navigate the sand-covered roads.

“We waste too much fuel on this road due to its road. It is slippery and because of that, our vehicles are always faulty. We are carting rice and other foodstuff to the market and our vehicles continue to develop faults.”

The local assembly has made repeated efforts to reshape the road and keep it in good condition.

However, the road's condition becomes a challenge as it gets dusty in the dry season and muddy for vehicular movement in the rainy season.

Residents of the Pru East District have expressed frustration with the inability to use motorbikes and cars on the roads.

“When it rains we cannot travel on motorbikes and cars refuse to ply the roads. After the road was reshaped we are not able to use it. We are not able to transport our farm produce to the market.”

“We have to put on our headlights even in the afternoon before you can see another vehicle coming. It is risky using the road because of the dust,” another said.

The parliamentary candidate for the NDC, Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, has expressed deep concern about the situation.

He has stated that the poor condition of the road is not only an inconvenience but also a safety risk.

“Pru East deserves its fair share of the year of roads. Let us know exactly what you guys are doing about it. Even in the district capital before 2020 elections, they brought in a contractor to construct culverts and drainage systems. I tell you that the road is about 20% completed and the rest of the 80%where it is?”

You cannot scam Ghanaians and the populace. You cannot continue to lie to us in the face in the name of Year of Roads and tell lies that you are doing infrastructure development. Meanwhile, the people of Pru East are yet to benefit from what you call the year of roads.”
