Casual workers at the Presidential Palace project currently under construction at the Flag Staff House in Accra, have agreed new remuneration arrangements with their employers.
They are to be paid GH¢4 per day, while a special ‘send off’ sums are to be arranged for them on their exit from the near-completion project.
The workers yesterday embarked on a sit-down strike to back demands for better pay and severance packages, and it took the personal intervention of President John Agyekum Kufuor to get them to rescind their posture.
They initially demanded no less than GH¢500 per year for each of the about 200 workers who claimed to have worked for two-and-a-half years.
The new arrangement, according to a member of the national security service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Amaning, who represented the presidency in a meeting today, the GH¢1 additional daily allowance is to capped with a yet to be determined amount per person on disengagement.
A number of the workers are to be sent home beginning next week owing to the advanced stage of the project which requires fewer hands.
In an interview with Joy News’ Sammy Darko, DSP Amaning said the workers have agreed the new terms and that payment, which would be across board, would be according to the number of workers being laid off at any given time.
