The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Gordon Awandare, has annulled the vetting organised by the Dean of Student Affairs.
He is stepping in to resolve a heated dispute between the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Dean of Student Affairs over the SRC electoral process.
This decisive move follows accusations from the EC that the Dean’s Office had interfered with the election by showing favouritism towards certain candidates.
In response to these claims, the Dean held a vetting on Saturday, August 3, 2024. The EC, however, rejected this vetting and scheduled a new one for August 20.
During an emergency meeting on Monday, August 5, at 10 am, which included the Pro Vice-Chancellor, the Dean and Vice Dean of Students, the University Legal Council, the UGSRC Chief Justice, vetting panel members, Electoral Commissioners, and the aspirants, it was determined that the Dean’s vetting was constitutionally invalid due to concerns raised by several aspirants and panel members.
As a resolution, a new vetting has been scheduled for August 11 at 6 pm.
This session will be live-streamed on the Commission’s website, with the exact venue to be announced shortly.
The vetting panel remains the same, except for the EC Chair, who has stepped down amidst the allegations. The deputy EC will now oversee the vetting process.
This resolution aims to restore integrity and transparency to the SRC electoral process, ensuring a fair election for all candidates.
