Lawyer and Member of NPP Communications Team Bernard Owiredu Donkor has called for a bipartisan probe into the reported GH¢22 billion losses associated with Ghana’s gold purchasing operations, saying a comprehensive investigation is needed to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
Mr Donkor said the controversy should not be reduced to political accusations between the governing party and the opposition. He urged both sides to support an independent investigation capable of determining how the losses occurred, who may be responsible, and what measures can be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Speaking at JoyFM Super Morning Show on Wednesday, August 19, he stressed that the investigation must cover the entire gold purchasing process, from the point where the gold is sourced through the various buying centres and ultimately to the Bank of Ghana.
“This whole activity of gold, right from the ground where it is taken to either the shops or to the Bank of Ghana,” Mr Donkor said, should be subjected to thorough scrutiny.
According to him, a comprehensive probe would help establish what happened at each stage of the gold transaction and determine whether the institutions and individuals involved followed the appropriate procedures.
Mr Donkor described the proposed investigation as an opportunity for what he called “in-regime accountability.” He argued that the government should take advantage of its current position to investigate the matter instead of waiting until it leaves office.
“This is an opportunity,” he said, stressing the need for the government to act while it has the authority and institutional capacity to conduct the investigation.
He explained that an investigation could produce important lessons for the country and also help clear the names of individuals whose conduct has been questioned.
“When the probe is started, lessons will be learned, or Sammy Gyamfi will be vindicated,” Mr Donkor said.
He also warned against delaying the investigation until after the current administration leaves office.
“We don't want 2029; the probe starts, the investigation starts,” he said, arguing that the matter should be addressed now rather than becoming another political controversy in the future.
Mr Donkor said a bipartisan approach would help reduce partisan tensions and give the investigation greater credibility. He maintained that the objective should not be to protect or target any political party but to establish the truth surrounding the reported losses.
He called on both the government and the opposition to support a transparent probe into the reported GH¢22 billion losses, with the investigation covering the entire gold value chain as well as the roles played by the Bank of Ghana and other institutions involved in the gold purchasing programme.
He urged the authorities to act immediately and ensure that the circumstances surrounding the reported losses are thoroughly investigated, with those responsible held accountable where wrongdoing is established.
