President John Mahama has nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
If approved, he will succeed in a substantive capacity after serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025.
Born on December 26, 1956, in Goaso, Ahafo Region, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has built a distinguished judicial career spanning more than three decades.
He has served at every level of Ghana’s judiciary, from Circuit Court Judge to the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and, since 2008, as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
Before his judicial career, he worked in private legal practice, taught at a grammar school in Nigeria, and served as Principal Inspector of Taxes at the Internal Revenue Service as well as Deputy Superintendent of Prisons.
Within the judiciary, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has held key leadership positions. He currently chairs the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council and the Election Management Committee of the Judicial Service.
He has also served as Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Judicial Council, Chairman of the Appointments Committee, and as oversight representative of the Chief Justice for several regions.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has contributed significantly to Ghana’s electoral jurisprudence. He has been part of committees that produced all editions of the Manual on Election Adjudication, chairing the team that oversaw the latest three-volume edition in 2024.
He has also trained judges and magistrates across the country on election-related laws.
Internationally, he has represented Ghana at major judicial conferences, including ECOWAS Court of Justice forums, the Commonwealth Judges Conference, and the World Conference of Chief Justices.
He is a member of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana and previously belonged to the Ghana Bar Association.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is married and speaks English and Twi. Outside the courtroom, he enjoys football, music, and walking.
If confirmed, he will assume leadership of Ghana’s judiciary at a critical time, bringing with him decades of experience, an extensive record of service, and a reputation for integrity and diligence.
