The Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley has urged the youth to pursue careers in technical and vocational education to better their chances of employment and drive national sustainable development. He said, generally, there were more jobs opportunities and better remunerations in the technical and vocational fields, than the formal sector, adding that, the former was the idle field to amass wealth. Dr McKorley gave the advice when he addressed 350 graduands at the 44th Certification Ceremony of Opportunities Industrialization Centre Ghana (OICG)-Accra. He explained: “I have many projects ongoing and I can tell you that a tiler at one of my sites is taking home GHS 15, 000 to GHS 20, 000 every month. This was highly competitive compared to salaries of degree holders working in the public sector. Dr McKorley said it was, therefore, unfortunate that technical and vocational education continued to receive limited attention over the years. He, therefore, urged stakeholders to prioritise skills training education to help drive the Government’s industrialisation agenda and ensure economic transformation. “We, as a country, have looked down on technical education for far too long. Technical education needs support and so I will encourage the government and the private sector to invest in them because technical education is the future" “Nurturing Skills for Ghana’s Industrialisation Drive; The Role of OICG Accra”, was the theme of programme. Certificates were awarded to the graduates, out of which 163 were females. The graduates were from eight skills training department namely: Electricals (125), Catering and Hospitality (85), Plumbering (22) and Motor-vehicle Mechanic (23). The rest were Graphic Arts (11), Fashion (72), Office Skills (8) and Building and Construction (4). Dr McKorley advised them to exhibit positive work attitudes to ensure that they benefited from the potential the sector held. A Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wireko-Bobby urged stakeholders in the informal sector to put in place measures to address the huge decent work deficit within the sector to boost its patronage. He said the poor working environment and quality of products, among other challenges, deterred individuals, businesses and the government from patronising its services and products. While commending OICG –Accra for its contribution towards the development of Ghana's human resource, he assured them of the Government’s support to ensure the Institute contributed its quota towards the industrialisation of the economy. He advised the graduates to take advantage of the contributory Three-Tier Pension Scheme as they entered the world of work in order to secure their future, especially in retirement. Mr Samuel Mawuli Sogbey, the Centre Manager, OICG-Accra, said the inadequacy of classrooms and workshops for training, instructional staff and operational vehicles impeded the smooth running of the Institution. He, therefore, appealed to Corporate Ghana and benevolent individuals to assist the institution to enable it to deliver quality and robust skills training to drive the industrialisation agenda. He urged the graduates to make good use of the knowledge acquired, exhibit a high sense of discipline, efficiency and good moral judgment to enable them to excel in their work.
