The Rotary Club of Tema Meridian, on Thursday organised a day's workshop on reading habits and the use of the dictionary for 300 basic school children from five deprived basic schools in Tema Municipality.
The deprived school were the Ashaiman, Ogbodzo, Adjetey-Ansah, Seprepor and Oyibi primary and Junior High Schools.
Participants were made to read aloud, allowed time to look for words in the dictionary and taught how to use the computer to enhance their studies.
Rotary Club and Unimax Macmillan Limited also jointly presented 100 copies of dictionaries, note pads and other school materials worth 1,000 Ghana cedis to the schools and the Club in addition distributed novels valued at 800 Ghana cedis to the participants.
The president of the Club, Mrs Gloria Moncar-Tay said the programme was in support of government's efforts towards developing education in the country.
She noted that teachers and students needed teaching and learning materials including reading of books and dictionaries to enhance academic work.
Mrs. Moncar-Tay explained that in line with the Club's motto "service above self" the deprived schools were targeted for the assistance.
Mrs. Lucy Kwapong, Tema Municipal Director of Education, advised students to read wide to broaden their knowledge to enable them to effectively communicate.
She said the dictionary is a very important tool in the study of any language, especially the official language to enhance communication.
Mr Charles Kofi Acquah Aikins, Director of Studies at International English Language Commission, who was a resource urged teachers to encourage students to read novels and advised students to use their leisure time productively.
