The Savannah Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mahama Zakaria, is urging feuding parties in Gbenyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, to give peace a chance following renewed clashes that have left at least 10 people dead and 12 others injured.
The violence, believed to have been triggered by a longstanding land dispute, has persisted despite the deployment of police and military personnel to the area.
On Sunday, August 24, five men were confirmed dead, while six others sustained serious injuries during an exchange of gunfire.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Mr. Zakaria revealed that NADMO was already preparing for potential emergencies related to the Bagre Dam spillage when the conflict erupted.
He noted that the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has convened a crunch meeting involving the Regional Minister, the District Chief Executive, and NADMO officials to determine immediate interventions.
He explained that NADMO could handle basic relief needs like drinking water and accommodation until reinforcements arrive from the capital.
Mr. Zakaria also emphasized the urgent need to beef up security in the area to prevent further bloodshed and restore calm to the community.
