A member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed disappointment in President Akufo-Addo’s address to the nation on the state of the economy.
Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby said the President goofed when he compared Ghana’s situation to other countries.
The NPP stalwart noted that although there could be a global crisis, other nations are taking drastic steps to protect their citizens.
A move, he observed, President Akufo-Addo has failed to do for Ghanaians.
“He made reference to a lot of countries around the world that are suffering but he didn’t go by the example where you have governments of a lot of the countries like the US and UK taking substantive and substantial actions on how to deal with Covid-19 and Russia Ukraine war and the effects of the international crisis on their economy.
“That is what we wanted to hear and not the litany of everybody else in the world is suffering because everybody else in the world is taking actions to protect their people,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday.
President Akufo-Addo on Sunday addressed the populace for the first time on the state of the economy.
Prior to the President’s address, Dr Wereko-Brobby was among the notable people who called for the President to speak in such difficult times.
However, the Policy Analyst said there was no substance in the President’s speech.
Although the President admitted that the nation is in crisis and outlined some measures that his administration has taken to soften the blow for the citizenry, Dr Wereko-Brobby wanted more.
He believed that downsizing the government and the dismissal of the Finance Minister could have been a more prudent start on the journey to resuscitate the economy.
“Mission not yet started at all. We heard motherhood statements on the pain Ghanaians are feeling and very little about what the government is doing to ease the pain.
“The government is far too large, with too many Ministers, irrelevant development authorities, district assemblies and so on. And this talk about a 30% salary cut is a completely useless thing to push because it is not the nominal salary of the appointee that matters, it is the on cost to the nation.
"Every appointee has accommodation, utility, personal assistant and security costs. So downsizing the government actually makes a substantial difference in the expenditure that we are having.”
