A 50-year-old yam seller from Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region has appealed to government to subsidize the school fees of Senior High School students to enable parents to educate their children. Madam Augustina Tawiah, told the Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza that, parents were impressed with the Capitation Grant and the School Feeding Programme, saying, no parent would have any excuse for refusing to educate his or her child. She however indicated that, the fees at the Senior High Schools were too high and that a lot of parents could not afford to pay, which may lead to some students dropping out of school. "The high fees may lead to some of our girls entering into early marriages whilst the boys may turn to the streets and involve in social vices" Madam Tawiah stressed. "It is hard for a petty trader like me to pay boarding fees, after striving hard to get GH¢560 (5.6 million cedis) to enrol two of my children in the Senior High School this year" the yam seller added. Madam Tawiah appealed to the Nkoranza District Assembly to assist brilliant but needy students to further their education both at the second cycle and tertiary institutions. Source: GNA
