Deputy Minister of Education, Clement Apaak, has warned that students involved in recent violent clashes in senior high schools will face severe sanctions, as authorities move to clamp down on hooliganism during inter-school activities.
In recent weeks, several incidents have been reported across the country, with some resulting in injuries and hospitalisation of students. Education authorities and security agencies have since pledged to strengthen supervision and enforcement at such events.
Stakeholders, including parents and civil society groups, have also called for stricter monitoring, counselling support, and enhanced security to prevent future outbreaks of violence.
Speaking on JoyNews on Monday, Mr Apaak said the government is awaiting a detailed report from the Ghana Education Service on the latest incident and expects firm disciplinary action against those responsible.
A student was hospitalised after a violent clash at the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru on 19 February 2026. Students from Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) clashed, with one student severely assaulted and taken to the hospital; the police have now launched an investigation.
“We anticipate that we will get a report from the Ghana Education Service. We expect that the most severe sanctions would be meted out to the culprits and the perpetrators,” he said.
Mr Apaak also confirmed that one of the victims, who was allegedly cornered and severely assaulted, is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
“We are updated with the information that one student who was cornered and was severely assaulted is currently receiving treatment,” he noted.
The Deputy Minister used the opportunity to issue a strong warning to students across the country, stressing that violent behaviour and indiscipline will no longer be tolerated.
“Let me sound this warning to students: the days when students felt they could misconduct themselves, engage in acts of violence and lawlessness and go free are over,” he said.
He added that the government is determined to ensure that students conduct themselves responsibly, especially during sporting and cultural events.
“We are very determined to make sure that students act in a civilised and decorous manner, especially when they meet for what should be healthy extracurricular activities,” he stressed.
