She has nailed it! And the next question that comes to mind is, who has nailed it?
In this world of ours, including Ghana of course, there are just a few who try their best to stand out of the crowd.
This lady is among this few. Yes, Shirley Frimpong-Manso has done it again! And she nailed it!
This time around, it is 6 Hours to Christmas. It was the premiere of this “twisted comedy” of hers and it was the second time I have been offered the privilege of watching this movie.
This first was an exclusive preview of the movie for a selected few at the Silverbird Cinema some weeks back and now the grand premiere at the National Theatre Friday night.
With movie premiers becoming a norm that is catching on fast with the masses, it was interesting to see how the ‘real’ audience react to the movie after watching it with some so called ‘swagga’ few.
With the strong backing of not just a huge money making telecommunications network, MTN, Shirley also had the strong backing of other big sponsors including Club Gold.
So the die was cast and many started trooping the National Theatre to see this 6th movie of this fine director. Movie lovers clearly knew her handiwork(s) and she never fell short when it comes to the numbers.
The National Theatre was [almost] filled to capacity!
The story
It looked like it was going to be a typical 24th December day for suave creative director, Reggie (Chris Attoh) and perhaps a slightly more memorable one as his girlfriend promises him dinner and fireworks before the stroke of midnight.
Things however took an exciting turn for him when his office colleague (Damilola Adegbite), a girl he's lusted after for a long time gives him a Christmas present he found impossible to refuse.
As Reggie's mind goes into an overdrive, events unfold into very hilarious and yet bizarre circumstances and it seemed a day that started with the promise of Christmas may just end in heartbreak and a gun to Reggie's head.... You've got to catch the movie 'live' for the unforgettable experience. How I wish I could tell you the whole stuff you know, but I've got to go.
The audience
Strangely enough though, on the night my interest was in the audience than the movie. Their reaction to scenes and the story was my key interest.
And from the constant laughs, shouts and claps, there was no doubt they were enjoying what they were watching.
I once said after my first viewing that, “Shirley Frimpong-Manso once again unleashes her brilliance in this well-crafted Christmas twisted comedy and the movie constantly awakens your 'suspense senses' (and raises your expectation) of what could possibly happen next,” and I guess the audience also saw that.
Damilola Adegbite, the Nigerian and Tinsel star who is actually making her first appearance in a movie has practically caught on well with the Ghanaian audience. The crowd couldn’t wait to hear from her after the premiere. Other casts from the movie were also present.
A few people I spoke to after the event where of the impression, “She has done it again” and truly, she has really done it again.
Shirley Frimpong-Manso has to her credit Life and Living It; Scorned; Perfect Picture; A Sting in a Tale and Checkmate.
