All shops in Accra are set to remain closed today, Tuesday, July 2, as part of the Homowo clean-up exercise initiated by the Ga Traditional Council, led by the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.
The exercise aims to enhance environmental cleanliness across the city.
According to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the clean-up exercise will commence at Sempe, Gbese, Abloa, Asere, and the Dogo Beach in Ga Mashie from 6:00 am to 12:00 noon.
Shops and businesses are required to remain closed on the designated clean-up dates, except pharmaceutical and health facilities to ensure the safety and efficiency of the clean-up activities as well as facilitate the full participation of all stakeholders.
In a press release signed by the Head of Public Affairs, the AMA explained that the clean-up activities had been grouped into six (6) zones covering the entire region with Zone 1 comprising areas within the AMA and three [3] sister Assemblies.

Meanwhile, leaders of the various groups and associations have been called upon to actively participate in the cleanup efforts.
The one-month campaign, themed “Let’s Keep Accra Clean,” is designed to promote good waste management practices, improve environmental hygiene, and instill a sense of community ownership and responsibility towards maintaining a clean environment.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ga Traditional Council (GTC) and other government agencies, targeting all 25 local government authorities within the Greater Accra Region.
Activities during the campaign will include household registration for organized waste collection services, education on effective waste management techniques, and strict enforcement of bylaws to ensure compliance with waste management regulations.
