The Steel Manufacturers Association of Ghana (SMAG) is praising the government for imposing a ban on exporting scrap metals from the country.
According to them, the exportation of the scraps inhibits their ability to get the best raw materials to produce steel.
The Association made the remark at a press conference to debunk allegations that they are protesting the ban on export of scrap metals.
They noted that the exporters pay monies to people to organize demonstrations against the ban, and they create the false impression that steel manufacturers are also part of the protesters.
Director of Operations for Scraps at the Tema Steel Company, Yakubu Abdul Salam said the manufacturers rather commend government for the ban.
Abdul Salam pleaded with the government to put measures in place to stop the importation of steel into the country to enable the local industry to develop.
He attributed the collapse of several edifices in the country to the importation and use of inferior steel products, saying that locally manufactured steel products are of a higher quality.
Abdul Salam touched on the economic implications of the importation of the steel into the country, saying that there are six steel companies in Ghana, who are creating about three thousand jobs so the government should control the importation in order to secure the jobs created.
