A 36-year-old taxi driver, who stole money and a mobile phone from a passenger he picked to Ashongman Estates at night, has appeared before an Accra circuit court charged with stealing.
The driver, Charles Bekoe, pleaded not guilty and was granted a ¢10 million bail to appear again on September 19.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Ben Dafour told the court presided by Mrs. Georgina Mensah that the victim, Ms. Sakyinatu Abdulai, at about 6 pm on August 20 chattered a taxi cab driven by Charles Bekoe to be taken to Ashongman Estates.
The prosecutor said after bargaining, Charles Bekoe agreed to take ¢40,000 as the fare.
He said Charles, instead of using the popular Haatso-Ashongman Estate road, rather went through the Agbogba road.
Inspector Dafour said at a place called Boshye, a bushy area on the Atomic road Bekoe stopped the vehicle, got out and pretended to be urinating.
Some minutes later, he returned to attack Ms. Abdulai and succeeded in collecting a mobile phone ¢50,000 cash and pushed her out of the vehicle and bolted.
The prosecutor said not quite long, another taxi driver e came by and after listening to Ms. Abdulai's story and the description of the taxi, took Ms. Abdulai on his vehicle, and gave the fleeing taxi a chase.
They caught up with him at Zongo Junction, Madina, got him arrested and sent to the Police Station.
He said after a search on him, only the mobile phone was retrieved. The money was nowhere to be found.
