The local president for the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has condemned the demonstration embarked upon by trainees of Mt Mary College of Education in Somanya, against authorities of the College. William Acquah, who is also the SRC President of Presbyterian College of Education in Akropong Akuapem says the demonstration was not necessary and amounts to indiscipline on the part of the trainees. Students of Mt Mary College of Education on Wednesday embarked on a demonstration through the streets of Somanya, after they were informed that they will be responsible for the payment of utility bills, plus an increment in their feeding fee. This demonstration, according to the Local TTAG President, William Acquah was unnecessary. He said the Ministry of Finance has since July 2010 issued a directive that all government agencies including Teacher Training Colleges shall be responsible for the payment of utility bills beginning September 2010. This according to William Acquah, was agreed upon by executives of Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana and the Principals of the various colleges of education, hence the need for the various colleges to charge trainees for the use utilities. He said it is high time all trainees understand and commit themselves to the new decision. William Aqcuah added that the trainees in spite of their grievance could have resorted to dialogue with authorities rather than embarking on such an unnecessary action.
