Educational workers in public universities are hoisting red flags and wearing red bands to signify their readiness to embark on an industrial action if they are not placed on the Single Spine Pay Structure next month. Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSAG) fear their migration may not be carried through by the July 2011 schedule. TEWU Chairman at the KNUST, Paul Manu says the groups are dissatisfied because the migration to the new pay structure has delayed for over a year. He told Luv News members were unhappy with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for the slow response in the implementation of the SSSS. “We were told that the single spine will be paid last year 2010 January but upon series of meetings, it seems that the thing is delaying. So we had a meeting three days ago and it came up to members that Fair Wages Commission were rather meeting the Committee of Vice-Chancellors… this is giving an impression that the thing will get long and longer and we’re [getting the understanding that] maybe this coming July, we may not even enter the single spine”, Mr. Manu stated. The groups have therefore warned that there will not be any compromise again after the July deadline. “Government should get prepared that this time we’re getting wild and wild because everything is increasing and we’re taking the old salary and we’re fed up by this time”, the TEWU Chair decried.
