Ostriches, though large and flightless, are famous for their incredible speed and intriguing behaviours that offer valuable lessons in navigating life's challenges.
By embracing their wisdom, we can learn to plan effectively and cultivate resilience.
Let's take inspiration from prominent individuals in our society who have overcome obstacles to achieve greatness.
They have demonstrated unique traits, taken bold steps, and rebuilt themselves after setbacks, propelling them to success.
The ostrich's ability to thrive in harsh environments is a testament to its remarkable adaptability. I would like to explore the life of Mr Daniel McKorley, a Ghanaian entrepreneur whose story amplifies resilience and determination.
He is known as the founder of McDan Group, which specialises in logistics, aviation, transportation, salt production, and agribusiness.
His journey is a reflection of the power of resilience. Despite setbacks and financial struggles, he consistently bounced back, leveraging his experiences to fuel growth.
Poverty, as Mahatma Gandhi once said, is the worst form of violence.
McKorley was a poor boy from Labadi who sold items on the streets. He once worked as a driver's mate on construction sites, until one day he got the opportunity to work as a messenger—the greatest opportunity that had ever come his way.
He stated clearly that it's not the big things that make the difference; it's the small things when you take them seriously.
The ostrich is adaptable, not rigid. McDan used this principle to conquer poverty.
After being introduced to someone at a logistics company, he remained disciplined and never gave up. He changed his environment, cleaned offices, ran errands, and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the job.
Let's not dwell on the popular myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand, thinking they cannot be seen.
McDan did not bury his head. When he dropped out of school, he pushed forward and developed a business idea: to store coffee, raise its value, and sell it at a good price. This generated substantial income for him.
But at one point, he lost everything. A heavy rainstorm destroyed his uninsured coffee stock, washing it all away. He had to sell his cars to pay his workers.
During this crisis, he did not remain passive or bury his head in despair. He pushed forward and made it clear that he never allowed his problems to defeat him.
"Don't use your feelings to deal with issues," he said. "What you accept will never upset, frustrate, or depress you."
McKorley's story teaches us that, like the ostrich—strong, adaptive, and resilient—we too can rise above our circumstances and achieve greatness.
