A security analyst, Adib Saani suspects some politicians are profiting from the perennial issue of violence witnessed at Bawku in the Upper East Region.
According to him, as a result of the benefits, it is in their interest to ensure that the issue remains unresolved.
“There are some politicians who have benefited from it. So it is in their interest to ensure that they keep fighting because it is from the fighting that they are able to political leverage to win political favours or make political gains, and that is a problem,” he said.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Saani expressed that aside from politicians, there are some individuals who may not be politically affiliated sponsoring the mayhem.
He has therefore advised that all such people should be dealt with.
“We also have some individuals who are sponsoring. So if we are able to stop all those from coming in, I think that would help,” he added.
According to the expert, despite the dire situation of Bawku, there is a lack of will on the part of government to provide solutions.
He said commitment is the 'most important ingredient' in remedying the situation. Without this, he said it would be impossible to engender an atmosphere of peace in the town.
Mr. Saani wants the government to prioritise human security within Bawku in the wake of recent terrifying occurrences.
He said government must provide the town with necessities such as food, water, adequate health facilities and adequate health facilities as well as solve unemployment issues to disincentivise the insurgence of violence.
Bawku has been making the news following several incidents of tribal conflicts which have claimed the lives of people.
Recent developments revealed that the Ghana Police Service is on a manhunt for gunmen who attacked and killed one of three immigration officers in the town. According to reports, the two have been admitted to the hospital and are responding to treatment.
Meanwhile, security experts are warning that the issue might exacerbate should the government not take more practical and progressive measures in addressing the issue
