The total value of mobile money transactions hit GH¢3.8trn in August 2028, the latest data from the Bank of Ghana has revealed.
This indicates that many Ghanaians are undertaking mobile money transactions than formal banking activities. It also shows the huge opportunities within the financial technology space.
From the recent trend, the total value of mobile money transactions will surpass the GH¢4.45trn recorded in 2025.
According to the September 2026 Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Report, the total value of mobile money transactions stood at GH¢446.2 billion in January 2026, but shot up marginally to GH¢446.6 billion in February 2026.
It again increased to GH¢484.6 billion in March 2026, and subsequently to GH¢493.2 billion in April 2026.
Again, it went up marginally to GH¢494.0 billion in May 2026, and then to GH¢492.9 billion in June 2026. In July 2026 and August 2026, the total value of mobile money transactions stood at GH¢509.4 billion and GH¢518.8 billion, respectively.
In 2025, the total mobile money transaction values grew by 50.8% to GH¢4.54 trillion, from GH¢3.01 trillion in 2024.
According to the 2025 Payment Systems Oversight Annual Report, the acceleration in transaction values underscored the increasing importance of e-money platforms in supporting economic transactions.
Meanwhile, the active mobile money accounts stood at 26.4 million as of August 2026, compared to 85.8 million registered accounts.
