Trades and Industry Minister, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has condemned the surge in cement prices at the beginning of the year despite the government creating an enabling environment for businesses.
The current price of cement on the market contradicts the government’s recent assertion of recovery in the sector.
In 2023, the Vice President, while touring the achievement of his government, pointed out the decline in the prices of goods including building materials such as cement.
But the assertion is contrary to the prices in the market after the Christmas festivities.
Expressing his disappointment, the Trades and industry minister says producers must reciprocate the government's gesture.
“You reciprocate the government’s gesture by being sensible with your pricing but you don’t rip off the people of this country”
K.T. Hammond also described the act as a conspiracy among producers and importers.
“The cabal of cement producers and importers have again conspired to increase the price of 50 Kg of cement by a considerable figure….I don't think that is right” he stated.
Mr Hammond however said, “The Ministry will issue a statement in due course”, to address the situation.
