Kumasi’s Kejetia Market traders have been urged to play an active role in maintaining hygiene in the busy commercial hub.
Speaking during a fumigation exercise at the market, Ernest Gyambrah, Sanitation Officer of the Kumasi City Market, said cleanliness is a shared responsibility and crucial for the market’s image.
“The market is the face of the city, and we all have a responsibility to keep it clean,” Mr Gyambrah told Adom News.
He noted that poor sanitation could encourage the spread of diseases, posing risks to traders, customers, and the city at large. He also cautioned traders to avoid activities that could spark fire outbreaks in the market.
“We must all do our part to protect the market. I’m urging all traders to be mindful of their actions and ensure they clean up and leave the market in order before heading home,” he added.
Management has committed to improving sanitation, with Mr Gyambrah revealing that it has been some time since the market was last fumigated. He expressed gratitude to BonAgro for supporting the initiative and said the goal is to make Kejetia a model of cleanliness and hygiene for the city and region.
Traders, however, raised concerns over household insects and rodents, saying they disrupt business. One trader noted: “These pests are really disturbing us,” echoing the views of many colleagues who called for regular fumigation exercises.
Victor Nchonah, Country Manager of BonAgro, said the company organised the exercise as part of its social responsibility to support Kumasi’s trading industry.
He added that the company is willing to partner with market management to ensure regular fumigation in the future.
