Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide has advised government to tread cautiously on its directive to reduce three of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Digital Terrestrial Television (DDT) channels.
Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako said government does not have enough grounds to make that request.
"Both in terms of content and assets, I don’t see government having much grounds on this matter," he told Joy News' host of Newsfile, Sam Lardy Anyenini on Saturday.
His comments come after the Communication Ministry directed the national broadcaster to forego three out of its six channels on the DTT platform.
Sector Minister Ursula Owusu Ekuful explained that the move is to ensure there is redundancy on the platform which is currently full.
She said the directive to also make way for other channels including those government needs to broadcast issues of national interest.
The directive, however, has received strong opposition from a session of the public, including Ningo Prampram Constituency MP Sam George.
The NDC legislator has said believes government wants to privatise the state broadcaster with the decision.
Veteran journalist Mr Kweku is the latest to wade into the controversy.
Although GBC has indicated that it cannot grant the request, he is urging government to stay out of the matter and instead, allow the National Media Commission to handle it.
“Government should tread cautiously on this matter. Let's trigger the National Media commission into all these things but I think government should stay out of this," he said.
