A parcel bomb went off at Chile's embassy in Italy on Thursday, hours after a similar device exploded at the Swiss embassy in the city, seriously injuring an employee.
A staff member was also injured in the Chilean embassy blast, although he was reportedly not in a life-threatening condition. A 53-year-old employee from Swiss embassy will be operated on at the city's Policlinico Umberto I Hospital and risks losing his left hand, apparently after a parcel blew up when he opened it.
A suspicious package was also found at the Ukrainian embassy in the Italian capital.
Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi planned to talk to Interior Minister Roberto Maroni to discuss the situation, his office said, after being informed of the second attack shortly after his end-of-year press conference.
Police are on the scene of the explosions to investigate. No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts yet.
There were also two bomb scares at a Rome city council offices Thursday, although they were false alarms.
Earlier, Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini condemned the attack on the Swiss embassy.
"We express total solidarity with the Swiss embassy and all its personnel, who have been subject to a deplorable act of violence that deserves our firmest condemnation," said Frattini.
"Our sentiments of sincere solidarity towards our Swiss friends are accompanied by our wishes that the injured employee recovers fully as soon as possible".
The blasts come after what looked to be a makeshift bomb was found in an empty carriage of the Rome metro on Tuesday, although it was later discovered to be a false alarm after it was revealed that it had no detonator and the material inside was not explosive.
Tension has been high in the Italian capital following a series of protests by students against the government and its contested higher education reform bill, one of which degenerated into a riot last week.
However, Thursday's incidents do not appear related to these protests.
Police were initially looking into the hypothesis that anarchist groups could be behind the attack on the Swiss embassy, sources said.
