The Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana says she is unable to confirm claims that an arrest has been made following an armed attack on a student Saturday night.

Armed robbers attacked a final year psychology student, Daniel Osei, leaving him in a pool of blood as he bled profusely from deep wounds from the head and legs.

The student was reportedly attacked along the road leading from Pentagon to the Evandy hostel which is situated on the university campus.

Following the development, the Director of Operations at the Greater Accra Police Command, ACP Kwasi Ofori, has moved to assuage fears of the university community, claiming that one person is in police custody assisting with investigations.

But the Director of Public Affairs of the University of Ghana, Stella Amoa has denied knowledge of such an arrest.

“A lot of information is coming through the media, I have not spoken to him (ACP Kwasi Ofori) and management has not been informed of anything,” she said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Tuesday.

She, however, confirmed that the Police and National Security have taken over the investigations and management of the university is hoping to be furnished with either an interim report or a final one soon.

Representatives of students and senior management of the university have paid a visit to the 37 Military Hospitals where the victim is currently responding to treatment.

Stating steps the university has taken since the attack on Mr Osei, a number of measures including transporting students to and from the 24-hour library session of the Balm Library during odd hours.

Also, the university will also provide security lights and post at vantage points on campus.

“Members of the university community, employees and the student body are entreated to cooperate with the security agencies and the University security as they undertake investigations to bring the perpetrator (s) of this heinous crime to book. 

“Further, members of the community are urged to cooperate with the security agencies in their collective efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment on all campuses of the university by reporting suspicious persons to the university security, and also to be vigilant.” the statement signed by Director of Public Affairs read in part.
