Ghana has taken a significant step in artificial intelligence and knowledge innovation with the launch of what is being described as the world's first AI-powered Supply Chain Management Compendium, developed by supply chain expert Ing. Professor Douglas K. Boateng in collaboration with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).
The platform was officially launched on July 15, 2026, at UMaT in Tarkwa, marking the transformation of the world's only Supply Chain Management Compendium into an interactive, AI-driven knowledge platform designed to support professionals, researchers and policymakers.
Originally published in South Africa in 2013 with support from industrial firms including SASOL and Transnet, the compendium has evolved from a traditional reference book into what its creators describe as a "living, conversational and continuously evolving intelligence ecosystem."
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Boateng said the innovation goes beyond technological advancement and seeks to democratise access to specialist knowledge.
"Artificial intelligence is not replacing knowledge. It is democratising it. This is not merely an innovation for Ghana. It is a contribution from Africa to the world," he said.
Unlike conventional reference materials, the platform enables users to engage with supply chain concepts through natural language conversations, allowing professionals to search, interrogate and build on thousands of curated frameworks, principles and real-world applications in real time.
Prof. Boateng described the platform as a reinvention of how specialised knowledge can be created, accessed and applied in the era of artificial intelligence.
The Vice-Chancellor of UMaT, Professor Richard Amankwah, said the collaboration demonstrates the growing capacity of African institutions to lead global innovation.
"UMaT is not merely collaborating in the launch of an academic resource. We are helping to demonstrate that African universities and African scholars can lead global innovation. Professor Boateng's achievement redefines how specialised knowledge will be created, accessed and applied in the age of artificial intelligence," he said.
Beyond academia, the platform is expected to support public sector procurement, healthcare logistics, infrastructure delivery, manufacturing and private enterprise by providing instant access to authoritative supply chain knowledge to improve decision-making, efficiency and accountability.
Its developers say the platform also aligns with Africa's broader industrialisation agenda, including the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), local content initiatives and regional value chain integration.
They argue that establishing a common body of supply chain knowledge and professional standards across the continent could strengthen collaboration, improve competitiveness and support long-term economic development.
Conceived in South Africa and developed in Ghana, the AI-powered platform is intended to serve governments, multinational corporations, development agencies, manufacturers, logistics providers and entrepreneurs across the world.
Its launch comes as artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries globally, positioning Ghana and Africa as contributors to the next generation of knowledge platforms rather than simply consumers of emerging technologies.
