Unilever Ghana has gifted products comprising Close-up and Pepsodent toothpaste, Key soap and Lipton tea bags to the Tema Police for their contribution in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Managing Director of Unilever, George Owusu Ansah, the donation was in appreciation of the work police in Tema is doing, especially in the recent era of Covid-19, as they work as frontline officials helping to ensure that all and sundry adheres to the protocols.

Mr Owusu Ansah indicated that as a corporate entity operating in the area since 1963, they have enjoyed the cordial relationship they have with the police and other stakeholders, hence the decision to pay a visit to the leadership of the police to offer their support.

He said apart from having the peaceful atmosphere to work in, most of its staff reside in Tema and its environs; therefore, their safety is also important to productivity.

Stressing on operations at Uniliver, he said the Ghana factory produces about 70 per cent of its products on the market, creating indirect jobs for its raw material suppliers and distributors.

This, he believes, would help reduce crime among the populace, explaining that people in gainful employment are less likely to indulge in criminal activities to survive.

He further noted that Unilever is doing its best to employ more women.

Mr Owusu Ansah said 40 per cent of Unilever staff are women and the company is working towards increasing the number to about 50 per cent.

He also disclosed that the company is hopeful of employing physically challenged persons up to five per cent of its workforce.

The Managing Director was accompanied by Michael Otchere Duah, Human Resource Manager, Henry Malm, Head of Communication and other staff.

Deputy Commissioner Of Police (DCOP), Barima Tweneboah Sasraku II, Tema Police Regional Commander, thanked the Unilever team for the visit and the items and said the items would go a long way to motivate personnel as the command would add it to items to be presented to men who got injured in the course of duty as well as the patrol teams to ginger them when on duty at night.

DCOP Sasraku added the regional command focuses on crime prevention, saying that even though in every society, miscreants exist, their aim was to reduce their activities to the minimum as it was more costly in terms of time, energy and funds to detect and investigate crime.

He added that even though police could investigate and prosecute deviants, they could not protect the emotional effect of crimes on victims, therefore the need for all to protect themselves and others as a preventive measure.

Mr Owusu Ansah revealed that working as police officers within the Covid-19 was not easy as personnel were uncertain on whether they could contract the virus from suspects when touching them during arrests.

The Police Commander's team included Deputy Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr. Anderson Fosu-Ackah, Superintendent, Otuo Acheampong, Regional Police Crime Officer, Chief Inspector Stella Dede Dzakpasu, and ASP Patricia Akuamaoh Boateng, Acting Staff Officer.
