The College of Technology Education of the University of Education, Winneba, says it is committed to its core mandate of producing qualified and well-trained teachers for the education sector. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akwasi Asabre-Ameyaw, says the university has over the years strived to introduce innovative courses and also created a friendly environment for academic work. He says the objective is to ensure the Ghana Education Service gets the needed personnel to spearhead training of the country’s human resource for national development. Professor Asabre-Ameyaw was speaking at the matriculation ceremony in Kumasi to usher in newly-admitted students for sandwich programmes. He said the purpose for which the University of Education Winneba was established is to train competent professional teachers for all levels of education as well as conduct research, disseminate knowledge and contribute to educational policy development. According to him the University has tried to achieve this mandate through innovative and transformational activities which have brought about systematic improvements in graduate output. Professor Asabre-Ameyaw disclosed that sandwich graduate output increased from 1,089 in 2008-2009 academic year to 1,719 in the 2009-2010 academic year representing an increase of 38 percent. The University of Education Winneba has a total of 46 sandwich programmes comprising 15 undergraduates and 31 post graduate programs. One thousand 219 students were admitted into various faculties for the 2011-2012 academic year. Professor Asbare-Ameyaw warned the students against attempts to induce lecturers for favours, stating that “Lecturers are here for you, feel free to get close to us but avoid very intimate social relationships avoid giving them monies and gifts because after all they are paid for whatever that they do for you”.
