The University of Ghana (UG) has announced it will allow fourth-year Senior High School (SHS) students to apply for admission into the institution for the 2011/2012 academic calender. The University says it is delaying the sale of forms till February to enable the students to purchase them. The students, however, would apply for admission without knowing their West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination results. Speaking on Citi News, Pro-Vice Chancellor of UG, Prof Kwesi Yankah said the institution is being very careful in dealing with 2011/2012 admissions to forestall any difficulties in future. “It would mean students in class four in secondary schools would be applying to enter the university or universities in general at the time that they do not know their results. "This is what is likely to happen but the university wants to take time and explain the entire situation to the public, to parents and to the potential candidates,” he stated. Other institutions such as the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) however, maintained that they would not tweak procedures in favour of the final year students in SHS who are still in school. Public Relations Officer of KNUST, Solomon Panford said although forms are yet to be sold, there would be no changes to the admission time-table. He contested that it would give the opportunity for the backlog of SHS graduates who have not been able to gain admission into universities to apply. Deputy Registrar at UCC who also spoke to Citi News, said his institution would maintain their current admission procedure and hinted that the cut-off point for admission varies, depending on the performance of WASSSCE candidates for each particular year.
