The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa in the Western Region has donated 30 boxes of Encyclopedia Britannica to ten institutions at a short but colorful ceremony at Tarkwa. The beneficiary institutions were Tarkwa Secondary School, Fiaseman High School, Benso High School, UMaT Basic School and Ghana Library Board, Tarkwa, all in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. The others are Huni Valley High School, Prestea High School, St. Augustine High School in the Preastea-Huni Valley District in the Western Region and Kwahu Tafo Presbyterian Senior High in the Eastern Region. Making the presentation, Mrs. Victoria Dodoo, University Librarian said the donation was to aid the beneficiary institutions to create reference sections in their libraries to help teaching and learning for overall national development. Mrs. Doodo urged the beneficiary schools without libraries to keep the books as reference materials and find a common place for students and teachers to have access to the books instead of turning them into decorative materials in offices. Mr. E.K Bedai, Registrar of the University observed that the vision of the University was not only to become a centre of academic excellence but also to provide support to other schools in the community who were in similar business with the University in knowledge acquisition and dissemination. Mr. Bedai said UMaT believed in the sharing of important resources such as books and other materials with schools in the community to help train school children to become future leaders in the country. Mr. Joseph Quagraine, Headmaster of Prestea Senior High School who received the donation on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked UMaT for the kind gesture and promised that the books would be put to good use. Earlier, Prof Newton Amegbey, Pro Vice Chancellor of UMaT asked the beneficiary institutions to see the donation of the books as a modest contribution by the university toward the stocking of their libraries.
