The University of Pennsylvania, USA is partnering Peace and Love Hospital to understand breast cancer survival in Ghana.
Radiation Oncologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Prof. Steven Avery, who led the delegation, emphasized the society's contribution towards effective treatment of breast cancer.
“You’re part of the actual cancer care. What you do, what you say and go out to tell other women, that is part of cancer treatment and so you play a role.
“So, it’s not just about the doctors and the nurses it’s about you, its about the community and all of us gathered here today,” he said.
Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiation Oncology Shannon E O’Reilly, revealed the intentions of the University to send their students to the Peace and Love hospitals to share in the experiences of the survivors.
“We are trying to have our students come here, I think it will be very excellent to see this facility, meet everyone and see the wonderful group you have here,” she said.
Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love Hospitals, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai observed that “the male patients are very shy they don’t want people to know them because they are few. even the women have issues with stigma they don’t want people to know that’s why these survivors who have come out, who are bold enough to show people that we have survived breast cancer and to show their scars are very brave.
She also explained that the survivors are sources of motivation to breast cancer patients.
“People look up to them, when they see or hear them it gives hope and that is something we all need. The hope to go through all the challenges,” she said.
The survivors expressed their excitement and appreciation for the presence of the delegation.
