The University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) has established a scholarship scheme known as “Nnoboa Fund” with a target of 50,000 Ghana cedis to support needy but brilliant students in universities.
Students in universities have to contribute towards the scheme while a special board of trustees would be set up to liaise with the Students’ Representative Councils (SRC’s) of to ensure the disbursement of the funds to beneficiary students
Mr Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, President of USAG, said this at a press conference in Kumasi to throw more light on the programmes and activities of the Association.
He said USAG had also planned to set up USAG Loan Trust and Investment Fund this year to enable students undertake viable ventures while in school and after completion of their courses.
Mr Boakye appealed to the government, churches, individuals and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOS) to donate to the fund.
He said USAG regretted the recent incident which occurred between students of the Unity and Katanga halls of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and expressed the hope that a committee set up to investigate the causes of the incident would come out with solutions to ensure peace in the university.
He also expressed concern about the incidence which cropped up between the SRC and the management of the Islamic University recently in Accra which led to the resignation of the SRC President and his Secretary and urged all stakeholders to help investigate the matter.
Mr Boakye said the association had recognized contributions of vice chancellors towards the development of the universities and commended them for their hard work.
On the impending December 7 poll, Mr Boakye called on political parties and their followers to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful manner to ensure peace and harmony before, during and after the elections.
