The Secretary to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr Walter Affo, has said the authorities of the universities may have to extend the academic calendar by two more weeks. That is to enable teachers who laid down their tools for weeks to back demands for salary arrears to make up for the lost time. Dr. Affo assured university students they will not be unduly affected by the strike if the extension is done. The strike is expected to end following the government’s decision to pay the teachers their salary arrears for 2009 immediately. He told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show hosted by Bernard Saibu, that the teachers were experienced enough to handle the situation in a manner that will not jeopardize the studies of students. There were fears that the universities will be closed down after today if the standoff was not resolved but that looks set to be averted. The strike is technically over, except that an official declaration will be made after UTAG leaders from the various campuses meet with their members on Friday. UTAG executives told Joy News the committee set up by President J.E.A. Mills to address their grievances held that their demands were legitimate and the recommendations have been accepted.
