Prof. Daniel Bour, the Vice Chancellor of the Valley View University, has been honoured by the chiefs and people of Manhyia in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District for his contribution to the development of education in the area. This was at a grand durbar attended by officials of the Ghana Education Service (GES). Prof. Buor has for three years running been giving out cash awards to teachers and school children in the community to motivate them and raise academic performance. Additionally, he has been supportive of the implementation of self-help development projects. A citation read by the Very Reverend Okontonmere Mensah-Bonsu, Ashanti Regional Manager of the Methodist Education Unit, said the community, staff and school management committees (SMCs) in the town as well as the GES were appreciative of his extraordinary support for education. Nana Kwaku Poku III, the Chief, said the community would forever remain grateful to him for the sacrifices he continued to make to help make things better for the people. Responding, Prof Buor pledged to do all he could to assist to improve on the standard of education not just in the area but the entire nation. The ceremony was used to also present prizes to four teachers of the Manhyia Methodist Primary School for outstanding performance during the year. They are Mrs Ophelia Osei, Mrs Margaret Sakyiwaa Marfo, Mrs Christiana Amehere and Mrs Agnes Asantewaa. They received undisclosed sums of money donated by Prof Buor. Mr Cosmos Yawo Dzansi, the District Director of Education, urged teachers to remain focused and continue to work hard and with high sense of professionalism to enhance academic performance. Mrs Elizabeth Asantewaa, the Head teacher, said the award scheme had brought about intense competition and hard work among both teachers and school children. Source: GNA
