Following the formal submission of the review of the 1992 Constitution to the President by the Constitutional Review Committee, JoyNews has engaged the Committee’s Chair, Professor Kwasi Henry Prempeh, in an in-depth discussion on the scope, process and outcomes of the nationwide exercise.
In the interview aired on The Pulse on Thursday, December 24, Professor Prempeh provided insight into how the Committee’s work began, outlining the mandate that guided its establishment and the principles that shaped its approach to reviewing Ghana’s Fourth Republican Constitution.
He explained that the process was deliberately inclusive, involving extensive consultations with a broad cross-section of Ghanaians, including individuals, civil society organisations, professional bodies, political actors, traditional authorities and other stakeholder groups.
Professor Prempeh noted that the Committee travelled across the country to gather public views, creating platforms for citizens to articulate concerns, propose reforms and reflect on the strengths and shortcomings of the existing constitutional framework.
The JoyNews conversation also explored the practical and institutional demands of undertaking a comprehensive constitutional review, shedding light on the rigour, compromises and commitment required to interrogate a document that has governed the nation for more than three decades.
