The Upper West branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers has declared a two-week strike action.
The strike is in solidarity with a member who was remanded into prison custody by a Wa Circuit court over a disagreement with his colleague.
Regional NAGRAT President, Mr Calistus Haruna believes the court did not treat the teacher fairly.
Mr Emilio Sungladoma who is the head of the mathematics department had an altercation with a colleague tutor at the Wa Senior High Technical School over who has the right to teach mathematics at the school.
The mathematics teacher, Mr Selasie was transferred out of the school last month but he resisted attempts by his replacement, Robert Dipku, to takeover the class as the new mathematics teacher.
The disagreement degenerated into a heated argument and Mr Sungladoma was called in as head of the mathematics department to resolve the misunderstanding.
Upon arriving on the scene, he asked Mr Salasie to leave the class since he was no longer a tutor in the school but Mr Selasie didn’t take kindly to the department head’s intervention and confronted him leading to further exchanges.
Selasie subsequently reported the case to the police who arrested Mr Sungladoma, reported Rafiq Salam.
The situation led to a court case and the head of the mathematics department was remanded in prison custody to reappear on Thursday May 26.
But his colleagues say his incarceration was a travesty of justice and are determined to stay out of the classroom until justice is done.
