The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has admitted its two flagship tournaments, the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) could be postponed because of what they describe as "scheduling nightmares."
The WAFCON was scheduled to be held in Morocco in 2024 but halfway through the year, CAF has yet to decide on a specific date for the competition.
In an interview with the BBC, CAF's General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba, admitted the confederation is struggling to fit the competition in the already crowded calendar.
“We are supposed to play this year but we have teams engaged in the Olympics, so we have to find another date,” Mosengo-Omba explained to BBC Sport Africa.
“We are talking with Uefa, because most of the players are playing in Europe, the European Club Association and also with Fifa in order to find [a] suitable date.”
The 2025 AFCON is also facing postponement by six months because of FIFA's new inter-club FIFA World Cup which will take place in the same summer as the continental showpiece.
“For the men, we need to make sure that the dates that we'll be choosing will be in the interests of the players,” said the Swiss-Congolese, highlighting issues around the workload of the continent’s elite players.
“For this we need to balance different aspects and also discuss with our partners and then we complete [the dates]. Scheduling is a nightmare for everybody.”
Ghana's Black Queens have secured a ticket for the next edition of the WAFCON following their impressive performances under Nora Hauptle while the qualifiers for the AFCON is yet to commence.
