The Bank of Ghana has indicated it is close to a no-counterfeit regime as it recorded only seven unfit currency notes out of the millions in circulation.
Head of Currency Management, Dominic Owusu, said the Central Bank has put in place strict measures to monitor currency in circulation in the country.
He however urged Ghanaians to desist from mishandling bank notes.
Speaking at a media engagement as part of the Ghana Month Celebration, he called for concerted efforts to help keep the cedi banknotes clean for them to last longer
“In Ghana, counterfeit is not a problem for us. We are far below when it comes to counterfeiting and when you look around on the continent, we are one of the few people making sure we don’t have many counterfeit within the economy. We are now somewhere around seven banknotes per million when it comes to counterfeit”
“The state of the cedi banknotes is significant to the country and its people, tourists and the outside world. If the currency is not handled well, it affects the image of the country. As we celebrate Ghana Month, I want to reinforce the fact that we must make it a point to always keep the integrity of our currency by handling them properly”, he stressed
He assured that the Bank of Ghana will continue to use the Ghana Month Celebration to interact with the media to promote everything Ghanaian, including food, music, tourist sites, and the sense of belonging.
