Government has fully settled all payments due to the contractor, MEL, working on the Ofankor–Nsawam road in the Greater Accra region, Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza has confirmed.
Mr Agbodza said $77 million has been disbursed, with no other arrears.
He stressed that the government does not owe the contractor “a penny” and therefore expects work on the vital road corridor to move without delay.
"In excess of $77 million. So as of today, we don't owe the contractor a penny; every certificate raised, which was outstanding before we came to power, based upon which they abandoned the site, we have paid fully."
He disclosed this on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, September 4, a day after accompanying President John Mahama on a tour of the project site on Wednesday, September 3.
During the tour, President Mahama charged the contractor working on the road project to complete the work on schedule, reminding him that the government will hold him to the June 2026 deadline.
The Ofankor–Nsawam project began in July 2022 with an initial completion date of July 2024. It stalled for many months due to mounting debt and worsening congestion along the corridor.
