The President of the Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa, Torgbuigah Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V has on behalf of his colleague kings called for an immediate stop to the  instability caused by the coup in Niger.

In a press release by Torgbuigah Adzonugagah Amenya Fiti V who is also the paramount king of the Aflao Tradional Area, noted that there is the need for Africans to be united for a common purpose devoid of all forms of political crisis including coup d’états, wars and other negative activities.

Torgbuigah Fiti V noted that the recent coup in Niger has really shaken the very foundation of the democratic principles in the region, and threatened the stability and progress of the African continent.

He noted that the Forum of African Kings and Traditional Leaders is very worried about the situation and has been deliberating on what to do in its own way to help bring some peace to  Niger.

Torgbuigah Fiti V said that the Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders recognises the negative impact on the protection of cultural heritage, peace, unity and stability throughout the African continent as well as acknowledging the complex challenges posed by the political crisis and the negative impact on member states.

He also noted that traditional leaders recognise the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States in maintaining regional stability and democracy.

Torgbuigah Fiti V said the forum firmly condemns the coup d’état in Niger as it represents an affront to the democratic values that should be held dear as a continent.

According to him, there are lessons to be learnt from previous military interferences and their negative impacts on the livelihoods of citizens particularly Liberia and Cote D’Ivoire which should guide African leaders in order to avoid such issues.

 Torgbuigah Fiti V noted that there is the urgent need to find comprehensive and sustainable solutions that address the root causes of coup d’états in West Africa and prevent future escalations, while safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.

Torgbuigah Fiti V said the  Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa is urging ECOWAS to exercise prudence, caution and a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in military interferences, considering previous experiences in Liberia, Libya and Cote D’Ivoire. 

Torgbuigah Fiti added that the Forum stands united against coup d’états and any attempts at re-colonization and emphasized the importance of Africa unity, sovereignty and self-determination.

He said the forum vehemently opposes any efforts aimed at undermining the hard-fought independence and sovereignty of African Nations and that all African political leaders must remain steadfast in upholding the principles of self-determination, accountability and good governance, thereby safeguarding the interests and wellbeing of their citizens.

''By upholding these principles, we can secure a brighter future for our continent, ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated and that African nations thrive on their own terms,'' he said.

The forum further called for an all-inclusive and multilateral approach to resolving conflicts, emphasizing the importance of engaging traditional and community leaders or land owners as integral stakeholders in the peace building process, and leveraging their unique insights and influence in fostering lasting peace and stability.

''With an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our people, the Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa says no to military interference in Niger and calls for a comprehensive, empathetic and proactive approach to address the conflict,'' Torgbuigah Fiti V said.
