Economist at the University of Ghana Business School, Prof Lord Mensah has emphasised the importance of looking to experts working directly with economic data rather than political figures or speculative projections.
Speaking on JoyFM's Super Morning Show on Tuesday, March 4, he pointed out that economic realities, such as high inflation, might be suppressed for political reasons, especially in the lead-up to elections.
"The true state of the economy can be suppressed for political reasons," Prof Mensah remarked.
He stated "You don’t expect me to tell you that inflation is around 70% when I know we are going into an election."
The professor emphasised that the real, unfiltered economic data should be the basis for assessing the nation’s financial health, rather than political narratives or promises from those seeking office.
“So from where I sit, we should appreciate the true state of the economy from those who are sitting by the numbers now,” he continued.
Prof Mensah further noted “Not those who have left, or those who are about to come to power."
According to Prof Mensah, the experts who are currently analysing real-time data are the ones best positioned to offer an honest and accurate assessment of the economy, free from political bias or electoral calculations.
"So to me, those who are sitting by the data are the ones who will be able to turn out the true state of the economy,” he said.
