The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast Branch (UTAG-UCC), has announced that it will not recognise the termination of Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong's appointment as Vice-Chancellor. 

UTAG-UCC contends that the decision was made unilaterally by the Chairman of the university's Governing Council and will not be acknowledged.

According to a letter from the Governing Council of UCC, Prof Boampong's appointment has been terminated.

Prof Boampong was originally appointed to a four-year term starting in August 2020, which was set to end in August 2024. 

However, his tenure officially concluded on July 31, 2024. Despite an alleged two-year extension of his term, the Governing Council has declared this extension null and void.

The termination notice was issued by Prof Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, on Wednesday, July 31.

The notice confirmed the end of Prof Boampong’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

In response, the UTAG-UCC Branch has issued a press statement rejecting the decision. They argue that the termination of Prof Boampong's appointment was improperly executed and should not be accepted.

UTAG-UCC insists that its stance reflects a broader concern about the process and governance of leadership changes within the university.

"In conclusion, the Council Chair’s purported termination of Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s renewed term as Vice-Chancellor is not recognized by UTAG, and we stand firm in ensuring that the duly constituted decision of the University Council is respected," the statement said.

Confusion rocks UCC as Council members resist supposed termination of VC’s appointment

Meanwhile, a group calling itself the Concerned Members of the University of Cape Coast Governing Council has also disassociated itself from the purported termination of the VC.

According to the group, they were shocked by the letter solely and privately written by the Chairman of the council, Prof H.S. Amonoo, and can confirm that there has been no decision regarding the termination.

In a statement signed by the executives of the group on August 1, they said, “We members of Council can state emphatically that no such decision has been made by Council in any of our meetings whatsoever.

"Council met on 30th of July, 2023 and no such matter was discussed, neither was any such decision made. We ask the Chairman to produce for us the minutes of the said meeting which took this decision."
