Minister of State designate in Charge of Special Initiatives at the Presidency, Emmanuel Agyekum says if approved by the parliamentary vetting committee, he will encourage Members of Parliament (MPs) to switch to electric vehicles (EVs).
This initiative, according to Mr Agyekum, is part of broader efforts to facilitate a smooth energy transition in the country and address the adverse impacts of climate change.
"We have been discussing energy transition and energy efficiency, and it is something we can achieve. For instance, we can install solar systems on our buildings and encourage MPs to drive electric vehicles to Parliament, positioning it as one of the most environmentally friendly parliaments in the world," he remarked during his appearance before the parliamentary vetting committee on Tuesday, 28 January.
The adoption of electric vehicles plays a crucial role in combating climate change, particularly by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing air pollution.
President John Dramani Mahama has been a strong advocate for climate change action both in Ghana and across Africa. As part of his commitment, he established the Ministry for Special Initiatives to drive innovative solutions for the country's development needs.
Under the previous administration, a number of electric buses were also procured and are currently operating in the national capital, Accra.
