The Agbogbomefia of Asogli state Togbe Afede XIV, has expressed his admiration for the action taken by President John Mahama in establishing the Constitutional Review Committee.
He said it during the President's Thank You tour in the Volta Region.
In an address to the gathering in Ho, Togbe Afede commended the President for recognising the urgent need to address the country’s outdated constitution, which he believes has contributed to a culture of impunity.
"I have always said that our constitution has outlived its usefulness, and it is partly the reason why impunity has thrived," Togbe Afede remarked. "People take national assets without any fear, and that has become a serious problem for our country," he said on Friday, January 24.
Togbe Afede expressed his appreciation for President Mahama’s commitment to reviewing this aspect, viewing it as an essential step towards improving governance and ensuring accountability.
“It is heartening to see that you are addressing this issue, particularly because we have long believed that the concentration of power in the hands of the president needs to be reconsidered" he said.
Your willingness to examine this part of the constitution demonstrates your dedication to the welfare and progress of our country.
Togbe Afede also took the opportunity to praise President Mahama for his efforts to restore Ghana’s image on the international stage.
He acknowledged the President’s diplomatic initiatives aimed at re-establishing lost friendships and reaffirming Ghana’s leadership role in African affairs.
“I enjoy watching you restore Ghana’s image through your travels, working to rebuild lost relationships and reaffirm Ghana’s leadership in African affairs,” he remarked.
Togbe Afede offered his heartfelt prayers for the President’s continued success, expressing hope that the good Lord would grant him the strength to carry out all the positive reforms he has planned for the nation.
“It is my prayer that the good Lord gives you the strength to continue with all the good work you have set out to do for Ghana,” he said.
"We in Volta are eagerly looking forward to the benefits of your leadership and the improvements in our living standards," he concluded.
