Women in the Bawku Municipality and its environs have threatened to abandon the kitchen and move into active politics because that is the only way to attain equity in the society. They said this was in line with PNDC Law 208 that allows citizens, regardless of their gender, to participate in decision making. The women said this at a forum organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for women’s groups and civil society organizations. The forum was to encourage women to participate in the upcoming district assembly election. The Municipal Director, Mr. Joseph Agoona, said women were influential in the development of every community and that the decentralized concept of governance would be an advantage to encourage women to participate in local level elections. He said when governance was brought to the door steps of the woman she eventually would develop the interest to participate and contribute to decision making. Mr. Agoona said women over the years had proved to be effective in bringing up children, home management and community development. The Principal Field Officer for the NCCE in Bawku, Mrs Selina Issaka, called on women aspirants who had contested the District Assembly elections before to set good grounds for their colleagues who intend to join them.
