The Minister-designate for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah has admitted that youth unemployment is one of the major challenges that threaten the security of the country.
Answering a question during his vetting on Wednesday, Mr Kan-Dapaah noted that his outfit over the years identified the issue as one of the major security risk factors.
He indicated that unemployed graduates often search for other alternatives, mostly social vices when they remain jobless for a period of time.
“Unemployment remains a very big issue. Once you have a system where people come out of the Universities and for the next four-five years they will not get jobs. They will just be walking around without any money after coming out of the University, obviously, you have a huge security problem.
“An unemployed graduate after four-five years can only become a security threat,” he stated.
According to World Bank, Ghana’s youth unemployment rate as of 2019 stood at 9.16 per cent.
Meanwhile, commenting on the advent of technology on youth unemployment, Mr Kan-Dapaah said the situation has become worse.
In his view, graduates tend to use these devices to commit fraud and other illegal cybersecurity activities.
“By the time they come out all of them are very good with the use of the internet and computers, therefore, they use it to undertake all sought of fraud.
"As for unemployment, we classify it as a major security challenge probably as challenging as armed robbery and other vices,” he said.
