The historic self-help Kwanyako Health Centre in the Central Region is in need of a structural rehabilitation.
The health centre which was built in 1984 by residents in the Agona District to help people live in good health, serves over 50 communities in the district.
The self-help project, however, is dwindling in despair and is on the verge of collapse.
The facility doused in serious leakages in the roofing, hosts withering medical furniture and equipment.
Residents have even resorted to donating some items from their homes to make up for the loss in the centre.
Chief of Agona Kwanyako, Nana Ampim Darko V, said that the facility which became operational in 1994, has submitted several appeals to successive governments and corporate organisations for rehabilitation but none has borne fruit.
He said that the deplorable state of the facility also poses a threat to the lives of those who work at the centre as well as that of those who partonise their services.
“The lives of the nurses, midwives, laboratory technicians and medical assistants as well as the patients are at risk due to the level of deterioration of the facility,” he bemoaned.
Helena Hayford, a midwife who works in the health centre, said the toilets and bathrooms are out of use for everyone because they are not functional.
The District Chief Executive for the area, Dennis Armah Frempong, said the assembly had been contacted about the poor nature of the Kwanyako Health Centre before the dissolution of the assembly on October 7, 2019.
It has been said that the renovation of the health centre was included in the 2020 budget before the assembly dissolved.
The DCE appealed to medical staff to exercise restraints whilst his outfit worked to ensure that the facility is rehabilitated.
