An award scheme to award women mentoring and inspiring young vulnerable adolescent girls has been launched in Accra.
Dubbed Ghana Most Inspiring Women’s Award, the event under the auspices of AfricMedia Galaxy and Women in Aviation Ghana Chapter, will celebrate distinguished women who have worked tirelessly to impact positively on the younger generation.
The maiden awards night would be held in September where young girls mostly drawn from various rural areas, would be brought under the same roof with notable successful Ghanaian women for mentorship.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Barbara Ayisi Asher, bemoaned the absence of a good number of female role models in the Ghanaian society.
“We need to make our young girls feel very confident. We therefore need to make this award scheme successful to provide a platform for these role models to interact with the young girls,” she stated.
The Deputy Minister observed that most times when girls see successful people, they believe it is easy to reach that level but ”life itself is not easy”.
For his part, Executive Director of AfricMedia Galaxy, Joseph Egyir Sarfo said, the awards seek to acknowledge and honour successful Ghanaian women who did not allow their poor backgrounds to weigh them down but broke all odds to reach higher heights.
He noted that quality education and exposure for girls and women are the most powerful tools in the fight against poverty, diseases and hunger.
“This award is to help develop sustainable strategies to identify mentors for young girls in deprived areas of the country.”
Mr. Sarfo said it is evident that educating girls and women is the single most important investment that yield maximum returns for development.
“We want to use this opportunity to have passionate women to support this core project and also to bring some of these children from their various communities to Accra to have a feel of the environment here to receive words of encouragement from these experienced successful women,” he added.
He, therefore, called on the Gender Ministry, Ministry of Education, Corporate bodies among other key stakeholders to come to their aid in making this life-changing programme a success.
The awards categories are; Most Inspiring Woman in politics and governance, Most Inspiring Woman in entrepreneurship, Most Inspiring Woman in technology, Most Inspiring Woman in Arts and Entertainment, Most Inspiring Woman in fashion, Most Inspiring Woman in health, Most Inspiring Woman in education, Most Inspiring Woman in media, Most Inspiring woman in social enterprise/charity, Most Inspiring Woman in Aviation and Most Inspiring Woman in Trade.
Meanwhile, the main event scheduled for September 14, 2019, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Accra.
